For a finite-dimensional vector space regarded as an F[X]-module through a linear operator, the monic invariant factors a1​∣⋯∣ak​ give the decomposition ⨁i​F[X]/(ai​). Their product is the characteristic polynomial and the largest is the minimal polynomial.
