Here Vd is the volume of the unit ball in d-dimensional Euclidean space. Rotational symmetry makes the integral an isotropic second-rank tensor Cδij. Taking its trace gives dC=∫∣x∣≤R∣x∣2ddx=dVd∫0Rrd+1dr. This proves the formula. For a constant matrix M, contraction gives ∫xTMxddx=VdRd+2trM/(d+2). In three dimensions the coefficient is 4πR5/15.
