For n+1 distinct interpolation nodes and an integer 0≤k≤n,
∑i=0n∏j=i(xi−xj)xik={0,1,k<n,k=n.
(1)
To prove this, the Lagrange interpolation polynomial for the data xik is exactly xk, by uniqueness of polynomial interpolation. The coefficient of xn in its ith Lagrange cardinal polynomial is 1/∏j=i(xi−xj). Comparing the coefficients of xn gives the identity. At k=0, values of the constant polynomial 1 are intended even at a zero node. Negative exponents are outside the assertion.
