For a compound Poisson distribution of count parameter λ and severity moments m1,m2, the expected value is λm1 and the variance is λm2. As λ→∞ with the severity law fixed and m2<∞, the standardized aggregate converges in distribution to the standard normal distribution. Indeed, the logarithm of its characteristic function is λ[φX(t/λm2)−1]−itλm1/λm2; the second-order expansion of φX makes this tend to −t2/2. The approximation loses the zero atom and assigns positive probability to negative losses.
