Two-pion isospin decomposition Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-25
Two pions, each of isospin one, have a nine-dimensional charge-state space. Clebsch-Gordan coefficients decompose it into an isospin-two quintet, an isospin-one triplet and an isospin-zero singlet. Under exchange of the two particle slots, the states are symmetric and the states are antisymmetric. Because pions have zero spin and obey bosonic exchange symmetry, the two-pion channel requires odd relative orbital angular momentum, while require even orbital angular momentum.
Vector meson 2026-10-14
A meson with total angular momentum one and negative parity. In the ordinary quark model, a quark-antiquark pair with orbital angular momentum zero and total spin one has these quantum numbers; its neutral self-conjugate states have charge conjugation . The light-flavour tensor product gives an octet and a singlet, forming a vector nonet, just as spin-zero negative-parity pairs form a pseudoscalar meson nonet. Nonzero orbital excitations can also produce vector states.
Zeeman spectrum for orbital angular momentum one Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
For orbital angular momentum and spin , considerThe quantum number is conserved. The stretched states with have energies . The remaining eigenvalues follow from two blocks with off-diagonal entries :The subscripts denote . For , the zero-field multiplets are at and at . Their weak-field Zeeman splitting is , with Landé g-factors and , respectively. When , the Paschen-Back effect gives approximate product states and energies . Mixing within a fixed causes an avoided crossing; different sectors can cross because the Hamiltonian does not couple them.
