TODO: the numerical resonance-area reading is unavailable from the retained source. Page 6 retains the upper data panels but loses the lower part of the scanned data image, including the numerical horizontal energy calibration. A vertical cross section scale and an apparent peak cannot supply without that calibration. The decoded image contains 2,834,898 of 4,437,216 required RGB bytes; the archived bundle has the same truncation. No horizontal scale or natural decay width is inferred from the display width.
The recoverable numerical conversion is nevertheless definite. With , , , and , b givesThis coefficient assumes the plotted exclusive electronic sample has not already been corrected for acceptance. A restored area, with continuum subtraction and acceptance convention checked, would complete the estimate. A tabulated modern J/psi meson width would be external information rather than a reading of these data.
The narrow scattering resonance indicates suppressed strong interaction decay. In the quark model, is below the open-charm quark threshold, so its constituents cannot simply emerge in separate charmed mesons. The OZI rule suppresses annihilation into light hadrons; for a color-singlet state the leading purely gluonic channel needs three gluons. The observed leptonic channels remain competitive. Its mass and fit charmonium; the small width alone would not uniquely identify the new quark flavour without the wider spectrum and threshold evidence.
The neutral vector mesons with isospin zero have the same conserved quantum numbers, so an off-diagonal mass matrix can mix the singlet and octet . Choose phases such thatAt the ideal mixing angle , or , these becomeThe overall sign of is unobservable. The omega meson near decays predominantly to three pions, whereas the phi meson near strongly favours kaon-antikaon channels when they are open. Suppression of its nonstrange channels agrees with the OZI rule and a predominantly strange state. The omega meson is below the two-kaon threshold, so its absence of that channel alone would not establish the mixing angle; masses and the broader decay pattern provide the evidence together.[ref]
The observed dominance of kaons supports a predominantly phi meson. In a connected strong decay, the original strange quark and antiquark survive into different kaons, while a gluon produces a light pair:This gives or and is allowed by the OZI rule. A pionic final state contains no strange valence constituents, so the initial pair must annihilate. The strong annihilation of a colour-singlet state requires at least three gluons: one gluon cannot carry the singlet colour, and two have the wrong charge-conjugation quantum number. This disconnected flavour topology is suppressed by the OZI rule, although it need not vanish.
Original quark-level topologies for connected kaon production, three-gluon annihilation into pions, and electromagnetic annihilation into leptons. The hadronization blob is schematic.
Details. The leptonic mode proceeds through and is suppressed by electromagnetic couplings; its width is proportional to times the vector-meson overlap. Unlike a strong hadronic decay, it cannot create its final particles through quark rearrangement. Hence a branching fraction of order is qualitatively consistent with electromagnetic annihilation competing with strong modes.
Kaon dominance is especially suggestive because phase space is limited: using the supplied neutral-kaon and phi masses,The two spin-zero kaons have orbital angular momentum to match the vector parent, so their partial width has the additional near-threshold factor . Pionic modes have more phase space yet remain subdominant because of their annihilation topology. The observations therefore support, but do not establish exact, ideal vector-meson mixing: a small nonstrange admixture, electromagnetic amplitudes and nonperturbative strong dynamics can all contribute to the pionic rate.
