For a positive integer n, the identity sin2(nx)=[1−cos(2nx)]/2 gives
⟨fn,fn⟩=∫−ππsin2(nx)dx=π,n≥1.
(1)
The stated nonnegative indexing includes n=0 as a special case: f0≡0, whose squared norm is zero. Thus ⟨f0,f0⟩=0; it cannot belong to a basis.
