For Δt=Δx/c,
y(x+Δx,t+Δt)=f(ct+cΔt−x−Δx)=f(ct−x)=y(x,t).
(1)
Equivalently y(x,t+Δt)=y(x−cΔt,t). Thus every value of the displacement is translated by the same distance cΔt: the entire travelling wave profile keeps its shape. The wave speed is independent of the profile, as expected for this nondispersive wave equation.
