The Lie algebra of SL2R is the space of traceless real two-by-two matrices. For A in this space, the Cayley-Hamilton theorem gives A2=cI, where c=−detA. Expanding the matrix exponential, if c=s2>0 then
expA=(coshs)I+ssinhsA,tr(expA)=2coshs≥2.
(1)
If c=0, then expA=I+A and its trace is 2. If c=−s2<0, then
expA=(coss)I+ssinsA,tr(expA)=2coss∈[−2,2].
(2)
In every case tr(expA)≥−2. But
g=(−200−1/2)
(3)
has determinant one and trace −5/2. Thus g∈SL2(R) is not an exponential, and the exponential map is not surjective.
