The irreducible characters are an orthonormal basis of the space of complex class functions for the inner product
⟨f,h⟩=∣G∣1∑g∈Gf(g)h(g).
(1)
Thus the row orthogonality relation and completeness statement are
∣G∣1g∈G∑χi(g)χk(g)=δik,f=i∑⟨χi,f⟩χi.
(2)
In particular the number of irreducible characters equals the number of conjugacy classes. In class-representative notation, the orthogonality relation is ∑jχi(gj)χk(gj)/∣Z(gj)∣=δik.
