Relative to a probability space (Ω,F,P) and a filtration (Fn), the real stochastic process (Mn) is a martingale if it is adapted, each Mn is an integrable random variable, and
E[Mn+1∣Fn]=Mnalmost surely for every n≥0.
(1)
Here adapted means Mn is Fn-measurable, and integrability means E∣Mn∣<∞. By the tower property of conditional expectation, the equivalent multi-step condition is E[Mj∣Fi]=Mi for all i≤j. The filtration is part of the definition; specifying only the marginal means is insufficient.
