For the given symmetric matrix, (1,1)T is an eigenvector with eigenvalue 1, and (1,−1)T is an eigenvector with eigenvalue 27. Normalize them to obtain
P=21(111−1),A=P(10027)PT.
(1)
Take the real cube roots of the two diagonal entries and transform back:
C=P(1003)PT=(2−1−12).
(2)
It is a real symmetric matrix, and C3=Pdiag(1,27)PT=A because PTP=I. Direct multiplication also gives C2=(5−4−45) and then C3=(14−13−1314).
