Use the vector triple product identity
a×(b×c)=b(a⋅c)−c(a⋅b).
(1)
Since n is a unit vector, put
w=n×(v×n)=v−(v⋅n)n,q=n×v.
(2)
Thus w is the component of v in the orthogonal complement of n, and n⋅w=0. A cross product is orthogonal to both its factors, so n⋅q=0 and v⋅q=0. Consequently
q⋅w=q⋅v−(v⋅n)(q⋅n)=0.
(3)
All three pairs are orthogonal. This remains true when v is parallel to n: then q and w are zero vectors. Pairwise orthogonality does not assert linear independence in this case.
