With the change of variables z=y2, multiplication of the differential equation by 2y gives z′+2xz=2x. The integrating factor is ex2, so
(zex2)′=2xex2,z=1+Ce−x2.
(1)
The initial condition gives C=3. Since y starts negative and z≥1, continuity selects the negative square root throughout:
y(x)=−1+3e−x2(x∈R).
(2)
This never reaches the singular value y=0.
