For an ideal dilute electrolyte with molar ionic strength I=21∑icizi2, measured in molL−1, the Debye–Hückel screening length is
κ−1=(2F2(1000)Iεrε0RT)1/2.
(1)
Taking water's relative permittivity as approximately 78.5 at 25∘C, I=0.10 M for NaCl. Therefore κ−1≃0.96 nm. This is an exponential screening length, not a hard outer edge of the diffuse layer. The factor of 1000 converts molarity into molm−3.
