The tangent space to a regular level set is the kernel of its derivative. Writing z0=x02+y02 gives
Tv0M={(ξ,η,ζ):x0ξ+y0η−z0ζ=0}.
(1)
If an affine tangent plane through v0 is intended, its equation is x0(x−x0)+y0(y−y0)−z0(z−z0)=0. Since x02+y02=z02, this simplifies to the same plane x0x+y0y−z0z=0, which passes through the apex.
