Height decreases at rate h˙=−v. Set m=m0−αt; an antiderivative needed for the rocket equation is
∫0tlogm0−αsm0ds=t−αmlogmm0.
(1)
Consequently
h(t)=h0−(v0−u)t−21gt2−αu(m0−αt)logm0−αtm0.
(2)
Differentiating this expression recovers h˙=−v and substituting t=0 gives h(0)=h0, which check both the sign and the integration constant.
