Put V(ϕ)=m2ϕ2/2+∑n>2λnϕn/n!. The Euler-Lagrange equation for the scalar field is □ϕ+V′(ϕ)=0, or explicitly
(□+m2)ϕ+n>2∑(n−1)!λnϕn−1=0.
(1)
The derivative of ϕn/n! is ϕn−1/(n−1)!; all interaction terms therefore enter with the displayed plus sign for the chosen Minkowski metric.
