For a continuously differentiable curl-free vector field F on a domain star-shaped about the origin, define Φ by the displayed integral. Differentiation and ∂iFj=∂jFi give ∂iΦ=∫01[Fi(tx)+txj∂jFi(tx)]dt=∫01∂t[tFi(tx)]dt=Fi(x). Thus F=∇Φ. To adopt the sign convention F=−∇ϕ, take ϕ=−Φ. The star-shaped-domain hypothesis ensures every segment used in the construction lies in the domain; curl-free fields need not have global potentials on arbitrary domains.
