The homogeneous equation has linearly independent solutions erx and xerx, with nonzero Wronskian e2rx. Setting y=erxu converts the forced equation to u′′=e−rxf. For resonant forcing f=erx, the particular response is x2erx/2. This substitution explains the extra powers of x required by repeated-root resonance.
