If resisting force per unit moving length is βv, the total resistance is βly˙ and y¨+Γy˙+ω02y=0, where Γ=β/(ρA). For Γ<2ω0, an initial velocity v0 from zero displacement gives y=(v0/ωd)e−Γt/2sinωdt, with ωd2=ω02−Γ2/4. Its quality parameter is Q=ω0/Γ, and the amplitude envelope decays at half the energy-decay exponent. The effective damping model is an assumption, not a derivation of detailed viscous flow near the wall.
