Differentiate the position vector r=rer+zez using e˙r=θ˙eθ, e˙θ=−θ˙er, and fixed ez. The first derivative is the velocity r˙er+rθ˙eθ+z˙ez; differentiating once more gives the displayed acceleration. In particular, r times the azimuthal acceleration is d(r2θ˙)/dt.
