Anomalous magnetic moment 2026-10-18
For a charged spin one-half particle with the Dirac equation reference value , the anomalous magnetic moment is conventionally expressed by the dimensionless quantity . For the Electron, write . A stipulated would therefore mean : a excess of the spin-component moment over one Bohr magneton. This is a teaching input, not a quoted measurement.
Electron electromagnetic vertex form factors 2026-10-18
For external Electrons on shell, factor out signed electric charge in the parity-preserving interaction vertex:The are Dirac spinors; are gamma matrices. With on-shell renormalization scheme normalization , the Gordon identity gives and .[ref]
QED Vertex Correction (Vadim Kaplunovsky course notes). Eqs. (3), (36)–(38)
This explains a subtlety: the Dirac equation already predicts a spin magnetic dipole moment with . Rewriting its Dirac electromagnetic current with the Gordon identity produces a spin-dependent term even before any loop order correction. measures the additional response after that baseline is included. The limit is taken after extracting its coefficient; setting in the interaction vertex at the outset would hide it. This electromagnetic anomalous magnetic moment is not a failure of gauge invariance of the kind called a quantum anomaly.
Charge normalization and the additional magnetic response
. Original schematic of the electron electromagnetic vertex form factors. The photon line denotes a weak external probe, not necessarily a real emitted photon. The lower bars use the chosen fine-structure constant : their vertical scales differ so the small remains visible. The Dirac equation baseline is , not zero magnetic dipole moment; the comparison is theoretical, not measured data. Details. Electron magnetic moment 2026-10-18
The electron magnetic moment couples an Electron's angular momentum to a magnetic field. Its intrinsic spin contribution isHere is the Bohr magneton, and is the positive electron spin g-factor under this sign convention. The minus sign makes magnetic dipole moment antiparallel to spin angular momentum. An Electron in a chemical atom can also contribute an orbital magnetic dipole moment; the measured response of a whole atomic level combines these contributions.
Measuring a tiny departure of from tests how well a theory predicts an Electron's interaction with its surroundings. The Dirac equation gives before radiative corrections; the anomalous magnetic moment makes a small correction experimentally accessible.[ref]
The magnetic moment of the electron by Polykarp Kusch. pp. 299–300: spin moment and Dirac prediction
A useful strategy is to compare two atomic energy levels whose orbital and spin contributions have different weights, rather than trying to calibrate an absolute magnetic field more accurately. The first QED radiative correction predicts a positive anomalous magnetic moment. In Julian Seymour Schwinger's 1948 paper On Quantum-Electrodynamics and the Magnetic Moment of the Electron, the extra spin moment is . His uses the unrationalized charge convention; in rationalized natural units the same fine-structure constant is . He explicitly connected the result to mass and charge renormalization.[ref]

In the electron spin g-factor convention used here,For the deliberately rounded teaching input , and . The correction is about of the Dirac equation spin moment. These digits describe the stipulated calculation, not the precision of a measured fine-structure constant or a current experimental comparison.
Trapped-electron spin-jump readout 2026-10-18
Hans Georg Dehmelt describes a , Penning trap, with positive ring and negative endcaps apart. Axial RF emission tracked an injected seven-Electron bunch losing particles; reducing the drive retained the last Electron. A weak magnetic bottle converted spin changes into axial-frequency changes. At successive probe frequencies, counted spin flips traced a resonance.[ref]

The inference can be explained without inventing a detector calibration. Let a weak bottle have on-axis field . The magnetic dipole potential energy adds to the axial harmonic oscillator potential energy, soA change in the magnetic dipole moment therefore shifts the monitored axial angular frequency. This is a simplified readout model, not a quantitative reconstruction of the historical bottle. It illustrates how a transition in one degree of freedom becomes a detectable change in another.
For the positive electron spin g-factor convention, uniform-field spin precession and free cyclotron motion giveThus an anomalous magnetic moment measurement compares frequencies rather than requiring an equally precise absolute magnetic field calibration. The free must first be inferred from trapped motion with the necessary corrections. A spin-flip count versus probe frequency supplies evidence for a transition resonance; it does not directly measure a spatial Electron radius. Nor is this radio readout an optical fluorescence record: different experiments require different preparations and detectors. In a precision comparison, repeat scans with changed drive strength and monitor magnetic field drift, motional excitation and detector back-action; these are experimental-design checks, not additional historical observations asserted here.
