Heat addition changes parcel entropy and departs from an adiabatic process. In an atmosphere, radiation, latent heating and turbulent heat transfer are examples. Spatially varying dust absorption can supply a thermal forcing for atmospheric waves; the heating distribution must project onto the wave's spatial structure to excite it efficiently.
