For a≥σ>0, assign probability σ2/(2a2) to each of μ−a and μ+a, and the remaining probability 1−σ2/a2 to μ. This probability distribution has expected value μ, variance σ2, and tail probability P(∣X−μ∣≥a)=σ2/a2. Thus Chebyshev's inequality is sharp when only these two moments are supplied. For example, μ=0, σ=1, a=2 gives masses 1/8, 3/4, 1/8. Replacing ≥ with > would exclude the two extreme points in this example.
