Let a real symmetric matrix have simple eigenpairs (λi,wi) and let
x=c−1(w1+ϵ∑i≥2aiwi).
(1)
Then its Rayleigh quotient is
RA(x)=λ1+ϵ2D+O(ϵ4),D=∑i≥2ai2(λi−λ1).
(2)
After one shifted inverse solve and normalization, the relative coefficients are
−ϵ3λi−λ1Dai+O(ϵ5).
(3)
Thus the eigenvector direction error is cubed at each sufficiently close iterate.
