For the logistic map F(u)=λu(1−u), factor F(F(u))−u and remove its two fixed points. The remaining quadratic equation is λ2u2−λ(λ+1)u+λ+1=0. Its distinct roots form a periodic orbit of period two when λ>3. The periodic-orbit multiplier is F′(u−)F′(u+)=4+2λ−λ2, so this orbit is asymptotically stable for 3<λ<1+6. It is born at a period-doubling bifurcation at λ=3.
