Because A is symmetric, translating r=x+a gives
xTAx+(2Aa+b)Tx+aTAa+bTa=1.
(1)
The linear term vanishes when 2Aa+b=0. Solving gives a=(−1,0,0)T. Since b=−2Aa, the remaining constant is
C=1+aTAa=3,xTAx=3.
(2)
This is completing the square for a quadratic form.
