The upper-triangular matrix has distinct eigenvalues

The defining power series shows that the matrix exponential respects similarity. Applying solution to the diagonal factor gives

e^{A} = S (e^{2} 0 0 e^{- 1}) S^{- 1} = (e^{2} 0 2 (e^{2} - e^{- 1}) e^{- 1}) .

As a direct series check,

(A^{m})_{12} = 2 (2^{m} - (- 1)^{m})

for

; summing this entry divided by
