Let A be a skew-symmetric matrix. For every real vector x, the real scalar xTAx equals its own transpose, but
xTAx=(xTAx)T=xTATx=−xTAx.
(1)
Hence xTAx=0. If Av=λv is a real eigenvector equation with v=0, it follows that
0=vTAv=λvTv,
(2)
so λ=0. If A is a diagonalisable matrix over R, it has a real basis of eigenvectors, all with eigenvalue zero. Thus A vanishes on a basis and A=0n.
The field matters: a nonzero real skew-symmetric matrix can be a diagonalisable matrix over the complex numbers, for example (01−10) with eigenvalues i,−i.
