For a uniform disk, the surface mass density is σ=m/(πa2). Integrate concentric annuli of mass dm=2πσrdr about the central perpendicular axis:
IO=∫0ar2(2πσrdr)=2πσa4=21ma2.
(1)
The result is specific to a uniform thin disk and that axis; it is not the diameter-axis moment of inertia, which is ma2/4 by planar symmetry and the perpendicular axis theorem.
