A cyclic coordinate is absent from the Lagrangian itself: ∂L/∂qi=0. Its conjugate momentum pi=∂L/∂q˙i therefore obeys p˙i=0. In the rolling-wedge calculation, the cyclic horizontal translation gives conservation of the system's horizontal momentum.
