For a long homogeneous circular wire of radius a, uniform volumetric heating H, constant thermal conductivity κ and negligible end losses, the steady heat equation is κρ−1(ρT′)′+H=0. Regularity at the axis excludes a logarithm term, giving T=Ts+H(a2−ρ2)/(4κ). If the surface obeys Newton's law of cooling, −κT′(a)=γ(Ts−Tair), then Ts=Tair+Ha/(2γ). Here γ has units Wm−2K−1 and H has units Wm−3. For uniform electric current I and constant electrical conductivity σ, Joule heating gives H=I2/(σπ2a4).
