A semi-infinite wave equation on a string with linear mass density ρ, wave speed c, and tension T=ρc2 has positive characteristic mechanical impedance Z=ρc. At an end attached to a massless viscous damper of coefficient α>0, displacement and transverse-force balance give the displacement reflection coefficient
r=Z+αZ−α,R=∣r∣2,A=(α+Z)24αZ.

Here A is the fraction of mean incident power dissipated. A prescribed 0<R<1 gives two positive damper coefficients, α/Z=(1±R)/(1∓R), with opposite reflected phases. Matching α=Z removes reflection.
