Tension is a pulling force transmitted along a taut string, rope, or similar body. For an ideal uniform string with linear mass density , constant tension sets the small transverse wave speed .
An ideal string of negligible mass and fixed length, transmitting tension when taut. In an ideal guide with no friction, the tension magnitude is the same on both sides: otherwise the force balance on an arbitrarily short massless segment would fail. Its fixed length gives a mechanical constraint relating the endpoint velocities. The two endpoint tension powers sum to zero when the guide is stationary; the string can transfer energy between connected particles without adding net energy.
