For complex matrices, the inner product ⟨A,B⟩F=tr(A∗B) is conjugate-linear in its first argument. On real symmetric matrices it becomes tr(AB). In particular ⟨A,xxT⟩F=xTAx, identifying quadratic forms with linear tests on matrices.
