Intergranular lane 2026-10-14
An intergranular lane is a region between solar granules, commonly associated with cooler material and descending flow. Horizontal convergence can concentrate approximately vertical magnetic flux there. The field's geometry, diffusivity and feedback determine the actual concentration rather than the lane label alone.
The Babcock-Leighton mechanism regenerates large-scale poloidal solar flux through the emergence and dispersal of systematically tilted bipolar active regions. With Joy's law tilt, opposite polarities have different latitudes: cancellation near the equator and poleward transport of surviving following-polarity flux alter and reverse the polar field. Thus a toroidal field that produces rising bipolar regions feeds back into a poloidal magnetic field. The source is intrinsically nonlocal between the interior flux reservoir and surface emergence and is stochastic because active-region fluxes and tilts vary.
A flux-transport solar dynamo couples toroidal and poloidal field generation through meridional advection, turbulent magnetic diffusion and possibly turbulent pumping. A common model uses the surface Babcock-Leighton mechanism, differential rotation near the tachocline, poleward surface circulation and an equatorward deep return flow. If advection dominates, circulation strongly influences the cycle period and migration; if diffusion dominates, diffusive coupling is important instead. Agreement with a butterfly pattern depends on the assumed transport geometry and coefficients, not merely on including a circulation term.
Interface solar dynamo 2026-10-14
An interface solar dynamo separates the region of strong differential rotation from the region of poloidal-field regeneration, often placing shear near the tachocline and an alpha effect in the convection zone. Magnetic transport across the interface couples the two regions. The separation can provide toroidal-flux storage in a relatively stable layer, but growth, period and migration depend on the transport, diffusivity contrast, and signs of the regeneration and shear coefficients.
Rotation influences convection, its helicity and differential rotation, which feed dynamo action. The generated magnetic field produces surface activity and strengthens the angular-momentum lever arm of a stellar wind. Wind braking lowers the rotation rate and ordinarily reduces unsaturated activity. Lorentz force feedback also changes the differential rotation and convective motions, saturating the dynamo on shorter time scales. Secular evolution, cyclic polarity reversal and irregular modulation are distinct time scales of this coupled system.
Solar butterfly diagram 2026-10-14
A solar butterfly diagram plots sunspot occurrence or magnetic flux against latitude and time. New-cycle sunspot belts appear at middle latitudes and migrate toward the equator, producing successive wing-shaped patterns. Magnetic butterfly diagrams additionally show poleward flux transport and polar-field reversals. The diagram constrains both Parker dynamo wave propagation and magnetic transport in flux-transport solar dynamos.
Hale's polarity law 2026-10-14
Bipolar solar active regions preferentially have one leading magnetic polarity in a given hemisphere and cycle, the opposite leading polarity in the other hemisphere, and reversed assignments in the next cycle. These statistical polarity rules reveal the ordered toroidal component of the solar magnetic field. Individual active regions can violate the preferred pattern, so the law is a statistical regularity rather than an exact rule for every spot pair.
Solar grand minimum 2026-10-14
A solar grand minimum is a prolonged interval, lasting several ordinary cycles, of strongly reduced sunspot activity. Historical records identify the Maunder minimum; cosmogenic carbon-14 and beryllium-10 provide longer indirect records because stronger heliospheric magnetic shielding generally reduces cosmic-ray production of these isotopes. Weak activity does not imply a zero solar magnetic field. Proposed causes include stochastic weakening of poloidal-field generation, nonlinear dynamo modulation, and intermittency near an excitation threshold.
For an orthogonal group gauge transformation , a scalar vector transforms as . The gauge connection belongs to the Adjoint representation, identified with axial vectors: the displayed cross-product identity makes its homogeneous transformation . The matrix connection also has the usual inhomogeneous derivative term. Thus transforms as an ordinary vector, including under improper orthogonal transformations. Treating both fields as ordinary vectors would fail because a cross product changes sign under an orientation reversal. A nonzero vector vacuum has stabilizer subgroup ; its connected part is .
Let be the smallest supporting prefix for a maximum left-compressed set family of -sets that is t-intersecting, and set . The maximum-support generator fibre gives exclusive count for a size- generator containing . By tight pairs of left-compressed generators, only classes with can conflict after deleting . For unequal such sizes, replacing both classes by the shortened generators of either class would imply
When and the classes have positive fibres, the reverse inequality is strict. For the remaining central class , , some earlier coordinate is absent from at least of its shortened generators. Those generators are mutually t-intersecting. Replacing the central class by that subfamily has gain-to-loss ratio at least
which exceeds one exactly when . This forces the support bound in the small-support generating lemma for extremal intersecting families.
In infinite-population slotted ALOHA, suppose new arrivals form an independent Poisson variable of mean per slot and attempt immediately. At backlog , let old packets attempt independently with probability . Their total attempted load tends to , so the total offered attempts tend to one and the success probability tends to . For the backlog has strictly negative drift outside a finite set, and Foster theorem proves a positive recurrent Markov chain. This mathematical benchmark requires exact backlog information; a practical feedback estimate needs its own analysis.
If a finite-population slotted ALOHA system has at most packets eligible to retry, uses independent retry probability , and has conditional probability at least of no fresh attempts in any slot, then its conditional idle probability is at least . The probability that the next slots all collide is therefore at most . Letting and taking a countable union over starting slots excludes eventual permanent collisions. Positive lower bounds on idle probability are essential: deterministic retries at probability one can create an absorbing collision state.
The displayed distance is the normalized Hamming distance. Each coordinate mismatch between implies a mismatch between or , so summing the indicator inequalities proves the triangle inequality. Nonnegativity, symmetry and separation follow immediately. It is a metric on profiles; on separately labelled individuals with identical profiles it is a pseudometric.
In simple linear regression written as , the constant and centred predictor columns are orthogonal. Differentiating the sum of squared residuals gives the displayed ordinary least squares estimators, provided . For independent mean-zero errors of common variance , both estimators are unbiased, their variances are and , and their covariance is zero. The uncentred intercept is .
A simple J-holomorphic sphere is a J-holomorphic sphere that is a simple J-holomorphic curve. Its automorphism group as a parametrized map is trivial, because any automorphism fixing the map fixes its locally injective points.
Existential embedding 2026-10-14
An embedding of first-order structures is existential when every existential formula with parameters from the source has the same truth value in the source and target. Forward preservation follows from being a structure embedding; reflection is the additional requirement. Applying compactness theorem to the target's diagram of a structure and the source's elementary diagram places the target inside an elementary extension of the source.
For the O3 nonlinear sigma model with energy , the rational map , , is a degree-one sigma-model lump. Its energy density is , whose integral is . The complex center gives its position, while gives its size and its internal phase. Varying the size preserves energy. The limit is singular at the center, so conserved degree under smooth deformations does not prevent concentration.
Fix the value for positive-degree sigma-model lumps. Their holomorphic rational maps can be written , where is monic of degree , has degree at most , and the polynomials have no common zero. The coefficients of and the nonleading coefficients of give complex parameters; coprimality is an open condition. The topological degree is , obtained by counting generic preimages with multiplicity. Allowing a common factor lowers the degree after cancellation and can describe a degeneration rather than another smooth point of this degree- parameter space.
Periodic azimuthal and vertical boundary terms vanish. Radial boundary terms cancel after the azimuthal translation prescribed by the shearing-periodic boundary condition. Consequently the volume average of a divergence is zero, enabling integration by parts for the smooth shearing-periodic fields.
For zero-mean fields in a shearing box, Fourier modes have wavevectors . A nonzero azimuthal or vertical index supplies at least , where is the largest box side; otherwise the nonzero radial index does. Parseval identity gives the displayed Poincaré inequality uniformly in time.
