The spin-triplet P-wave charmonium multiplet , with and . Radiative cascades between S-wave vector mesons and these states generate bands in three-body Dalitz plots.
At fixed , use and in the 13-pair rest frame. The endpoint values of its relative cosine give the displayed Dalitz plot boundary. The momenta are fixed by the Källén function; . Integrating gives the invariant-coordinate area, whose phase-space normalization still contains .
The three on-shell spatial momenta have nine components. Four conservation constraints leave five, and an unobserved overall spatial rotation removes three for the scalar decay, leaving two internal kinematic variables. The pair invariants obey
Thus two determine the third. They also determine each rest-frame daughter energy,
and hence all momentum magnitudes and pairwise angles. The momentum triangle is fixed up to overall orientation. The Dalitz plot describes this internal kinematics, rather than claiming to record three independently oriented Four-vectors. Polarized parents or additional measured spin information can require orientation variables beyond the two invariant axes.
The charged two-pion and three-pion channels can be assigned to the same spin-zero kaon by their parent mass and lifetime. For two spinless pions, total angular momentum zero forces their relative orbital angular momentum to zero, so the product of their intrinsic parities gives
For three spinless pions, use Jacobi orbital angular momenta . Coupling them to total zero requires , and hence
Thus both channels cannot conserve parity in decays of one parent with a definite parity. The weak decay interaction permits the observed coexistence.
Dalitz plots identify the three-body events, determine their internal kinematics, and allow amplitude and angular-momentum analyses through their populations and resonance structures. Together with the spin and parent-identity evidence, they support the parity assignment. They are not a standalone parity-odd observable: reversing all three momenta leaves every , and therefore every point on the plot, unchanged. A flat distribution by itself cannot establish parity violation without the channel and spin information.
In a relativistic two-body decay, four-momentum conservation in the parent's rest frame requires and
For fixed daughter masses, this fixes a unique , independent of direction. In the Lorentz-invariant phase space integral, the Dirac delta distribution enforcing conservation of energy therefore performs the radial momentum integration. Only the solid angle remains to be integrated; the resulting can be taken outside that integral, even if the matrix element depends strongly on direction.
For three or more final particles, four-momentum conservation generally leaves continuously variable daughter energies and momenta, so the decay rate includes integrations over them, or equivalently over independent invariant masses in a Dalitz plot. Integrating over a variable daughter invariant mass is also necessary when an unstable daughter is treated with a finite decay width rather than a fixed mass.
The three structures are the radiative cascades
In the quark model, the J/psi meson and are respectively and charmonium states. Thus , , , and meson parity and charge conjugation gives . The intermediate chi c mesons are : , , and addition of angular momentum permits . Consequently
These are electric dipole transitions, changing by one and preserving to leading order. A singlet state has and is not another member of these spin-triplet cascades.
The primary photon energy is , about , and for . The secondary photon remains more energetic even after its boost into the parent rest frame. Hence : with this quantity on the vertical axis, each resonance gives a horizontal band. A finite decay width and detector measurement resolution broaden each band; photon ordering removes the mirrored duplication of an unordered Dalitz plot.
The faint band beside the negative-slope diagonal boundary is , followed by . The neutral pion is predominantly , a pseudoscalar meson with . This production transition violates isospin, accounting for its small rate. To locate the band, set and . Four-momentum conservation gives
For the neutral pion, is small, putting the line just inside the boundary. The allowed channel, with the eta meson also , produces a parallel line further inside, at . The positive-slope edge instead comes from ordering the two photon energies; proximity to that edge alone would not identify the two-photon state.
