David Gross co-discovered asymptotic freedom with Frank Wilczek. Their calculation showed that a broad class of Non-Abelian gauge theories approaches free-field behavior at very short distances, with calculable logarithmic deviations. This gave a theoretical route from quantum chromodynamics to quantitative high-energy predictions and helped explain why deep inelastic scattering could reveal nearly free pointlike constituents inside strongly bound hadrons.[ref]
