A generalized quantum measurement is specified by operators Mi satisfying ∑iMi†Mi=I. On input ρ, outcome i has probability Tr(Mi†Miρ) and conditional state MiρMi†/Tr(Mi†Miρ).

Generalized measurement postulate
A positive operator-valued measure is a family of positive operators Ei satisfying ∑iEi=I. It determines measurement probabilities Pr(i)=Tr(Eiρ); choosing measurement operators with Ei=Mi†Mi additionally determines state updates.
