The equilibria are 0 and −ε±ε2+λ. Their linear trace is κ−v∗2 and determinant λ−4εv∗−3v∗2. For nonzero ε the symmetry-protected pitchfork bifurcation splits into a transcritical bifurcation at λ=0 and a saddle-node bifurcation at λ=−ε2. The energy H=v˙2/2+λv2/2−2εv3/3−v4/4 obeys H˙=(κ−v2)v˙2. For positive λ, the two outer saddle equilibria have unequal barrier heights, so the symmetric heteroclinic cycle unfolds into separated one-way connections and a homoclinic orbit termination of the central stable limit cycle.
