A mixture responsibility is the posterior probability of a component label given an observation and current parameters: τij=πjfj(yi)/(∑lπlfl(yi)). Each observation's responsibilities sum to one. The expectation-maximization algorithm uses these soft assignments rather than fixed hard cluster labels.
