For simply connected space SU(5) broken to the connected Standard Model subgroup, the exact homotopy sequence gives π2(G/H)≅π1(H)≅Z. Stable magnetic monopoles form. Their gauge and scalar cores have scales (gη)−1 and (λη)−1; their masses are MM∼4πη/g times a dimensionless profile factor. The physical subgroup is (SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1))/Z6, which retains an infinite-cyclic fundamental group.
