The squared norm is obtained by moving the adjoint operator to the other side of the inner product:
∥a−ψ∥2=⟨ψ,a+a−ψ⟩=2m⟨ψ,(H−21ℏω)ψ⟩.
(1)
For an energy eigenstate, this is
∥a−ψ∥2=2m(E−21ℏω)∥ψ∥2.
(2)
Since a squared norm is nonnegative, every nonzero energy eigenstate has E≥ℏω/2. Moreover a−ψ=0 exactly when E=ℏω/2.
