For Di=εijEj, B=μH, and a plane wave with electric polarization e, the source-free Maxwell equations imply
k×(k×e)+ω2μεe=0.
(1)
If e is an eigenvector of ε, then e⊥k, the dispersion relation is ∣k∣2=ω2μεe, and the Poynting vector is parallel to k.
