Pointed set 2026-10-05
A pointed set is a set with a distinguished element . A morphism of pointed sets is a function carrying the distinguished element to the distinguished element. The resulting category of pointed sets has every singleton as a zero object.
A pointwise periodic self-map returns each point to itself after a positive number of iterates which may depend on the point. It is a bijection: each finite cycle supplies predecessors; equality of two images can be undone by an iterate with an exponent one below a common multiple of the two periods. The set consequently decomposes into disjoint finite permutation cycles. Pointwise periodicity does not imply that one iterate is the identity on an infinite set.
Let for a fixed atomless forcing order , and . If a set were its internal power set of , choose with . The next generic filter belongs to , so ; transitivity of implies , contradicting generic filter for an atomless order is new. The chain is increasing but need not be an elementary chain.
The principal filter in an ordered set generated by contains exactly the elements above . It is upward closed, and is a common lower bound in the filter for any two of its members. With standard notation for forcing, these are the conditions weaker than . The principal filter need not be a generic filter: a dense set can require a strict strengthening. The compatible-condition filter in a forcing atom determines a ground-model generic filter includes strengthenings as well as weakenings and can therefore be strictly larger.
Private-witness diagonalization for incomparable enumerable sets Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-06
To prevent a Turing functional from computing the indicator function of an enumerated set , reserve a permanently unique fresh witness . On observing a convergent computation with oracle use , enumerate into if the answer is zero; otherwise keep it out. Restrain subsequent lower-priority enumerations into below . Higher-priority actions may initialize this strategy and retire its witness, but witnesses are never reused. In a finite-injury priority construction, mathematical induction on priority shows that the final computation, if observed, remains correct as a computation from the final oracle and disagrees with at . If no computation is ever observed after the final initialization, the final oracle computation diverges, since any convergent computation uses only finitely many eventually stable oracle bits.
For a generic filter in product forcing, let be its coordinate projections. They are filters in an ordered set. Given and , choose separate pairs witnessing their membership and then a common strengthening in . Upward closure puts in , proving the displayed equality. Every ground-model dense factor set lifts to a dense product set, proving genericity of each projection over the ground model.

Reachability in a graph Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-06
A vertex is reachable from if a finite path leads from to , respecting edge directions in a directed graph. For a finite graph, graph search decides reachability by maintaining the set of discovered vertices; every step discovers a new vertex or examines an edge, so the procedure terminates.
Recursively repetition-free labelled tree Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-06
For a label set , define inductively: choose a root label and a finite repetition-free sequence of rooted trees in as its children. Each object is a finite ordered rooted tree. Labels are distinct along each root-to-leaf path, and child rooted trees at a vertex are distinct as whole rooted trees. Labels may repeat across different branches; children need not have distinct root labels. For a finite pool of size , the exact number of rooted trees satisfies
This follows by choosing the root and then an ordered repetition-free list from the finite pool of smaller rooted trees.
If is an infinite Dedekind-finite set, then is another such set. Single-vertex rooted trees inject into it. A countable sequence of distinct rooted trees gives finite lists of labels by the depth-first traversal of a tree in the prescribed child order. By countable union of explicitly ordered finite lists without choice, an infinite union of labels contradicts Dedekind-finiteness. A finite union is equally impossible, since every rooted tree then lies in the finite set , by mathematical induction on using the recursive child rule. Thus no countably infinite subset of rooted trees exists.
Relative constructible universe Created 2026-10-03 Updated 2026-10-05
For a transitive set , the relative constructible universe is the union of the relative constructible hierarchy, starting at , applying the definable power set at successors and taking unions at limit ordinals. It is the smallest inner model of ZF containing and all its members. For an arbitrary set , take the base to be the transitive closure of , so that . Axiom of choice need not hold for an arbitrary base; the construction uses initial parameters rather than a predicate relativization.
The satisfaction relation says that the finite code of a first-order formula is true in a set-sized first-order structure at assignment . It is defined uniformly in set theory by recursion on the finite syntax tree: evaluate atomic relations, Boolean operations and quantifiers over the given domain. A code includes only finitely many subformulas, and their truth relations are sets. This does not define a truth predicate for the ambient universe, whose domain is not a set. Finite relation closure for set-theoretic coding gives an explicit closure criterion ensuring that these truth relations are computed correctly in a transitive set.
Separation proof in the constructible universe Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-07
To separate a subset of a constructible set by a formula interpreted in the constructible universe, apply the reflection theorem for definable hierarchies to the formula and its subformulas. At a sufficiently large reflecting level containing the parameters, the desired subset is definable and belongs to the next constructible hierarchy level. The reflection proof uses least witness stages and ambient Axiom schema of replacement, so does not presuppose Axiom schema of separation within the constructible universe.

An uncountable subset of the real numbers whose intersection with every null set for Lebesgue measure is countable. Testing only Borel sets suffices because every Lebesgue-null set has a Borel null superset. No measurability of is assumed.
