Gold is the chemical element with atomic number 79 and symbol Au. It is a transition metal. It resists many ordinary oxidizing conditions and conducts electricity well. Its color and the optical response of gold nanoparticles depend on electronic structure and particle geometry, so bulk metallic appearance does not predict every nanoscale spectrum.[ref]
