For z∈Rm and β>0, the scaled log-sum-exp function is
LSEβ(z)=β1log∑i=1meβzi.
(1)
It is a smooth convex function satisfying
maxizi≤LSEβ(z)≤maxizi+βlogm.

Log-sum-exp function
Composing the log-sum-exp function with finitely many affine functions gives a differentiable approximation to their pointwise maximum. Increasing the inverse-temperature parameter β reduces the uniform approximation error while increasing the Lipschitz gradient constant.
