For a birth-death chain on the integers with right/left probabilities pi,qi>0 depending on parity i∈{0,1}, define hθ(k)=k−θ1{k odd}. It is a harmonic function for a Markov chain exactly when
θ=p0+q0p0−q0=−p1+q1p1−q1,
(1)
equivalently p0p1=q0q1. The correction is bounded. Stopping this martingale at boundaries −aN,bN gives a lower exit probability tending to b/(a+b) as N→∞, even though the original position need not be a martingale.
