The scalar mass matrix is the Hessian matrix of the scalar potential at a vacuum. Its eigenvalues are the tree-level squared masses; broken symmetry directions are zero eigenvectors before a Higgs mechanism or explicit symmetry breaking removes the corresponding massless modes.
